Vertical Scenery
The Chisos Mountains are an ecological island marooned
by altitude. From a distance the peaks appear treeless, but
the Chisos' higher slopes are forested with oak, pine, and
juniper.
As you travel the park, be alert to subtle differences in
vegetation and wildlife habitat. Change elevation, and
encounter different worlds. As you ascend Basin Drive,
desert scrub gradually turns to grassoland, scattered junipers
begin to appear, and dense woodland fills the highest
canyons.
