About Texas
The State of Texas covers 261,797 square miles, the second largest state in the United states, behind Alaska. With a population of 20,851,820, it is also the second largest state behind California. Texas is bordered by Mexico on the southwest, the Gulf of Mexico on the southeast, and by the states of New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana on the north and east. The Rio Grande River forms the border with Mexico.
With such a large area, Texas has a large variety of scenery and topography. Geologically, Texas is divided into four regions: the gulf coastal plains, the interior lowlands, the great plains, and the basin and range province. Extensive agricultural regions, large metropolitan areas, seashores, mountains and deserts can all be found in Texas. Texas has two national parks, Big Bend National Park, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Both of these are in the basin and range province and include both deserts and significant mountain peaks.
Texas has a history that includes being under both Spanish, French and Mexican rule, and being and independent country after winning its independence from Mexico in 1836. It was admitted to the union on December 29, 1845.
Texas is represented on UntraveledRoad by tours in the basin and range province, including particularly Big Bend National Park.
