South Carolina is one of the original 13 colonies. They were the eighth to ratify the constitution, on May 23, 1788.
South Carolina lies on the Atlantic coast and is one of the "southern states". The climate is warm and humid and the landscape is green with vegetation. 32,101 square miles are included with its boundaries. The highest point is at Sassafras Mountain at 3,560 feet in elevation.
The capital and largest city is Columbia. The state's population was estimated at 4,407,709 in 2007.
