About Missouri
Missouri lies in the heart of the Mississippi River basin, covering 69,704 square miles. The Mississippi River forms its eastern border. The Ozark Mountains lie in the southern part of the state, while plains cover the northern areas. The highest elevation is 1,772 feet at Taurn Sauk Mountain, and the lowest point is 230 feet on the Mississippi River.
Missouri became a state on August 10, 1821, being the 24th state in the union. The capital is at Jefferson City. The population was estimated at 5,878,415 in the year 2007.
Missouri covers a fertile and well-watered country with farmland, forests and lots of vegetation. Small communities dot the landscape with occasional large cities. Springs, creeks and rivers are abundant.
